Our lives run on a high-tension wire. We have projects to finish, deadlines to meet, money problems, kids problems and so much more. And as we go along stress becomes our partner. Thus begins the hunt to reduce stress. The answer surprisingly lies in your diet. Food is not only necessary for survival, but it can also serve as a way to manage stress.
A healthy diet is one that’s high in fruit and vegetables. This includes leafy greens, the primary one being spinach. The magnesium-rich chlorophyll centre, when eaten raw, instantly amplifies your energy levels allowing your body to battle stress. One of the best sources of vitamin C, oranges, cause your body to produce higher levels of antibodies thus enhancing immunity and consequently battling stress. The high content of Vitamin B and E in almonds is a great reason to pick up a handful for your next snack!
Another must-have vegetable, high in vitamin and potassium content, is sweet potato. This starchy vegetable has bulk to keep your tummy full for hours, thus eliminating the need for unhealthy filler treats.
Have you found yourself reaching for the toffee tray when stressed out? Studies have proven eating sweets actually does relieve stress. Though this may be great news for our tongues, the high sugar consumption will do more damage than good in the long run. Thus sweet potato, with its natural sugar content and sweet taste will stave off the craving, literally saving us from ourselves.
Dried apricots are another delicious way to curb that chocolate craving. The magnesium rich fruit relaxes your muscles when you are stressed allowing your body to recuperate into a calm state.
How about an even tastier relaxant- turkey! The amino acid Tryptophan present in turkey produces a calming effect thus reducing stress.
Why does a heavy turkey meal make you sleepy? Tryptophan, an amino acid present in turkey, is a natural sedative. Thus turkey consumption when you’re stressed is helpful, as Tryptophan causes Serotonin, a feel-good chemical, to be released from the brain. This in turn, helps you feel good!
As your exam date approaches and you get tense, you can feel the adrenaline rush up your veins. Sound familiar? Adrenaline and cortisol are known as stress hormones, as stress activates their secretion. In these high stress situations, seafood such as salmon, containing omega-3 fatty acids reduce the secretion of stress hormones, keeping you calm and relaxed to a certain extent.
Butter fruits and walnuts also assist in relieving stress. Complex problems require simple solutions. So just eat right and keep the stress away.

Many people assume that fruits and vegetables are equivalents. However, nothing could be further from the truth.
The problem here is that if you don’t know how to optimize your fruit intake you could end up gaining lots of weight.
So here are 6 things about fruit that you need to be aware of:
1. They have sugar: And if you have a lot of fruit in one sitting you can overload your system with sugar. Although the sugar from fruit digests at a slower rate, it does cause your liver to produce more LDL and triglycerides.
2. Fruit in smoothies is not a good option: Although a smoothie will have all of the contents of the fruit, it’s still a liquid form of calories. And any type of liquid calorie will spike blood sugar and completely shut down fat burning.
3. Combinations of fruit are better than super fruits: Having a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries won’t be as healthy as a bowl of oatmeal with a combination of berries. So avoid focusing on one type of fruit and try to have a combination of fruits.
4. Aim to get the darker colors: The darker the color the healthier the fruit. So don’t completely avoid light colored fruit, but try to focus more on darker colored fruit. After all, you might as well get as much nutrition as possible.
5. Juice from fruit will make you gain weight: Not only is it loaded with sugar, but it gets digested very quickly. This in turn will shut down your body’s ability to burn fat. So always stay away from juices, especially if they are processed.
6. Focus fruit intake during the morning for best results: Having fruit in the morning can actually be beneficial because it will restock your liver with nutrients that have been depleted while you were sleeping. Thus, if you are going to have fruit have it with breakfast.
Eating fruit for the sake of health and weight loss is not a wise decision. You will be far better off having vegetables instead!
